The deadly garden - Mandrake

Inspired by the paradox of a breathtaking flower capable of deadly effects, this piece began with a spark of curiosity. The cheerful image of Professor Sprout from the Harry Potter series mingled with the darker folklore of the mandrake, creating a blend of whimsy and danger that compelled me to explore the plant’s true form. The sketch that emerged became the heart of this mixed‑media work.

Originally created in 1998 and thoughtfully updated in 2025, the artwork features a felt‑tip and watercolor marker sketch, hand‑cut and layered onto decorative scrapbook paper. Beneath it rests a crisp white backing shaped like a Polaroid frame, giving the piece a nostalgic, archival presence. The work is signed and assembled with intention, honoring both its origins and its evolution.

The frame itself is a thrifted find, restored and gilded with gold paint, then gently distressed to echo the mandrake’s own mythic reputation—beautiful, potent, and weathered by legend. The finished piece measures 6 inches wide, 8 inches high, and approximately ¾ inch thick.

A study in contrast, curiosity, and folklore, this artwork captures the tension between charm and danger, innocence and myth.
